Effective to Cotton Bollworm Biological Insecticides on Cotton Vegetable HaNPV + Bacillus Thuringiensis
Trichogramma spp., Microplitis mediator, Amblyseius cucumeris, Bacillus thuringiensis and Helicoverpa armigera nuclear polyhedrosis virus (HaNPV) have been mass reared or commercially produced and used in China.
The most successfully utilized insect pathogen is the bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) which is used extensively for management of certain lepidopteran pests. In India, mostly imported products of Bt kurstaki have been used, which are expensive and there is an urgent need to develop aggressive indigenous Bt strains against various pests.
Baculoviruses comprising nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) and granulosis virus (GV) have been successfully used as
insect pathogens because of their high virulence and specificity.
NPV and GV formulations are used for lepidopteran pests like Helicoverpa armigera (HaNPV) and Spodoptera litura (SlNPV) in India, besides Anticarsia gemmatalis NPV in Brazil, Lymanttria disper NPV, Orgyia pseudotsugata NPV in USA and GV of Pieris rapae in China.
Working Mechanism:
Helicoverpa armigera nucleo polyhedro virus (HaNPV) is a microorganism that kills cotton helicoverpa armigera. After spraying onto crops and being eaten by pests, the virus particles replicate and multiply in the pest body, and quickly spread to all parts of the pest. Parts of the body are drastically engulfed to consume the tissues of the worms, and the pests do not eat or move during the period of ‘illness’, causing a sub-lethal effect, and eventually the whole body is killed by water, spraying on the insects, the larvae that will hatch will bite after eating the egg shell Death by feeding on the virus. In addition, virus particles can continue to be transmitted to the next generation or other pests through the body fluids and feces of dead insects like a ‘plague’, so that field pests can be effectively controlled for a long time.

Baculoviruses have a unique mode of action. The virus infects and reproduces within the insect larvae, resulting in death, and the virus can then transfer to subsequent pest generations and lead to sustainable population reductions in the pest population. Its unique mode of action has the further advantage of addressing resistance to other pesticides or managing resistance prevention in pest control strategies.
Existing viral formulations are easy to use and can be sprayed like any other insecticide. They are compatible with almost all other active ingredients. Therefore, we see increasing potential for the use of insect viruses in integrated strategies of integrated pest management systems.
When using this product, wear protective clothing and gloves, masks to avoid inhalation of liquid medicine, do not eat or drink while drinking. After application, wash hands and face, and clean the skin of exposed parts in a timely manner, be sensitive to silkworms, and avoid use around silkworm and mulberry areas.
